Moving to Glasgow; Entering the Royal Air Force

1939 - 1945

After World War II began Jimmy moved to Glasgow and worked as an engineer for James Howden and Company. He found digs in the East End of the city with a lovely family- the McCullochs- whose daughter May came to be his wife in 1945. During the war years, Jimmy enlisted with the Royal Air Force as a Training Pilot. He spent time in London, Brighton, St Andrews, Scone and Manchester as part of his training as a Navigator. And during his time in the forces, he travelled all over the world- even landing in New York to be greeted by Glen Miller and his Orchestra at the harbour. Of course, travelling abroad like this allowed him to bring home items of luxury which were rationed in Scotland, which made May very happy!
